Wotton Under Edge U10 Boys Win the County Cup
Wotton travelled to Cheltenham for the Annual County Cup. Last year Wotton fielded one team mostly made up of younger players (U9) and after finishing a respectable 4th coach Andy Edwards and the team decided to make it their aim to try to place in the top two this year.
Well what a difference a year makes. This time Wotton was able to take two teams. The A team consisted of the more experienced players but still featured two U9 players Scott Patterson and Reuben Edwards who both performed brilliantly against mostly older boys. The B team was made up of the newer players and captained by Dan Berry. It also featured more of our future stars who played up from the U8’S Charlie Emms and Mathew Pullin. The B Team played some great Hockey and learnt lots which they will take through with them to next season.
Wotton A performed consistently well with victory’s in all 6 games scoring 12 goals in total, many from the stick of striker Sam Bryson. The boys didn’t concede a single goal all day, testament to great goal keeping from Morgan Garside and defence from Josh Johnson and Benjamin Pullin. The game of the day was against the second placed Cheltenham A. The battle was fought between the two midfields with great work put in by Jack Sparrow and superb skills by Lena Brewer. The game was on a knife edge when Wotton found an opening inside the Cheltenham D with the keeper beaten. Reuben shot into the open goal only for a Cheltenham player to stick a foot out to stop the certain goal! The umpire didn’t hesitate to award the penalty flick although they are very rarely given in the juniors. With seconds left on the clock up stepped Captain Jacob Edwards to flick the ball into the net to seal the victory and in all probability the Championship.
After this nail biter the team had to collect themselves which they did and went on to win the tournament by a clear four points.
