Attached is a very helpful re-issue of the rules/ guidance for Gloucestershire Badgers' Hockey Circle.

We have received the below from Badgers co-ordinator Brian Mobberly. Please can players, parents, coaches and umpires who officiate these games ensure they read and understand:

Badgers Hockey Note November 2015

Hi everyone,

I hope that you’ve all managed to get (at least) some of your fixtures played to date & look forward to the rest of the season.

I’m hearing good reports about newcomers Ross which is nice; on the other hand, I think we’ve all been saddened hearing of the problems at Lydney Badgers & their mens club reducing to a single team. This drives home the reason for having Badgers hockey as few school now feed boys into clubs.

I make no apology for restating that over 10 years I believe that generally Badgers playing standards have risen with the average squad age reducing. Many 15 year olds are capable of playing at the senior levels where vacancies exist in their clubs.

The following reminders relate to original tacit agreements & principles relating to
Aims & Rules of Badgers Hockey.

Aims (original policy adopted by Gloucestershire Mens Badgers Circle)

  • To provide a link between mini or junior or school hockey and the senior club and afford the opportunity to play regularly in FUN, friendly fixtures without the pressures of league hockey
  •  To invest in the development of each young player to their fullest potential for the long term benefit of both players and parent clubs and to develop the habit of club hockey.
  •  To comply with the EHB Policy and Principles for ‘A Single System Of Hockey’

Rules

The only change to the Rules I’m proposing is to reduce the number of adult players from three to two, one of which may be a goalkeeper if a junior goalkeeper is not available. Adult players take part specifically to add shape, experience & give encouragement to the youngsters and are expected to operate in a defensive or distributive position.

Note that ‘adult’ in the context of this note means any player regardless of age who is or has played hockey regularly at senior (club) level.

Badgers Hockey is played to the Rules Of Hockey as published by FIH with the following modifications

• Matches may be reduced to 30mins each way if players are very young or in the case of inclement weather.
• Adult players are not allowed to enter the opponents circle
• Adult players are not allowed to take any part in attacking or defending penalty corners unless a goalkeeper.

Please would you ensure all umpires and ‘adult’ players are aware of these simple but essential modifications.

I would like to be able to assume that unless anyone has any specific objection to any of the above rule modifications we have a general agreement.

Hope you all have a good season.

Regards,

Brian Mobberley
